Students at a Telford secondary school have started the new school year by taking part in a phone-free initiative.

Charlton School, in Wellington, has launched the new project as part of its commitment to creating a calm, focused and distraction-free learning environment.

Principal Sarah Barton said all the students had received a personal Yondr pouch which allowed them to securely store mobile phones, smart watches and headphones throughout the school day.

“Our priority is ensuring that every student can learn in an environment free from unnecessary distractions,” she said.

“Research and experience show that reducing mobile phone use during the school day can have a positive impact on concentration, engagement, wellbeing and social interaction. We are delighted with how positively the students have responded and are excited about the benefits this initiative will bring to our school community.”

Mrs Barton said the phone-free initiative was in line with current Department for Education guidance and followed extensive planning, communication with families, and dedicated training sessions for students.

Pupils took part in an extended tutor‑time briefing, watched a demonstration video, and were given clear guidance on expectations to ensure a smooth and consistent rollout.

“Throughout the day, students keep their locked pouch safely in their bags, with devices accessible again once pouches are unlocked at the end of the school day,” Mrs Barton added.

“Early feedback from staff has been extremely encouraging, with classrooms already benefiting from increased focus, improved engagement and a calmer atmosphere.

“The initiative also supports students in taking a healthy break from screens, strengthening peer relationships, and contributing to positive wellbeing.

Assistant principal Paul Wakelin explained the wider impact on school culture: “We want our students to be fully present in their learning, their friendships and school life.

“The introduction of Yondr pouches supports this vision and reflects our determination to provide the very best environment for young people to thrive academically and personally.”
