Burton Borough School in Newport has bid an emotional farewell to its ‘incredible’ year 11 students with a day of celebration, reflection, and joy.
Students arrived in high spirits, signing shirts, dressing up, taking photos, and sharing special memories with friends and staff.
The school field was alive with laughter and camaraderie as the BBS community – students, staff, and younger peers – came together in the sunshine to celebrate the achievements of the ‘remarkable’ year group.
The highlight of the day was the final assembly, hosted by the year 11 team, where awards were presented to recognise students who have demonstrated resilience, progress, and outstanding commitment to the school’s values.
Special honours were given to Bonnie Taylor, who collected the assistant head of year’s award, Kaci Gilbertson who won the head of year’s award, and Seb Curbishley who was given the assistant headteacher’s award.
Talented musical performances from students, including the Curbishley brothers and Ollie Edwards captivated the audience, while a surprise act featuring tutor Mr While-Cooper, Mason Morris, and James Spencer brought smiles all round.
The assembly concluded with a moving speech from Tayla New, who shared reflections on her time at BBS and the unforgettable journey of the ‘Class of 2025’, before students enjoyed a surprise farewell video from staff and were applauded out of school in an emotional final goodbye.
Assistant head Maria Griffiths said: “It was an honour to lead the final celebration day alongside the fantastic Year 11 team. It was filled with excitement, laughter, and a few tears as we said our goodbyes.
“I’ve seen this year group through from year 7 to 11, and it’s been a privilege to watch them grow and progress into the young adults that leave us this academic year.
“I wish them every success in the future and know that they will keep on shining as long as they believe in themselves in the same way that we believe in them.”
The school’s principal Caroline Bedford added: “We are immensely proud of the Class of 2025. Their dedication, spirit, and kindness have made a lasting impact on our school community.
“This group of students has shown resilience and strength, and it has been a privilege to watch them grow. We know they will go on to achieve great things, and they will always be part of the Burton Borough family.”
