New Road Academy recently hosted a careers event to support students in planning their next steps after Year 11. The event featured a wide range of organisations including the Royal Navy, Birmingham Newman University, Telford College, Royal Air Force, Juniper Training, Muller, NHS, Shrewsbury Town College & University, Nova Training, Shrewsbury College Group, Access Sport, RAF Museum, Reaseheath College, Walford College, Kuehne + Nagel, Crossbar Education, and Paveaways.
Students had the opportunity to speak directly with representatives from these organisations to learn more about college courses, apprenticeships, and career pathways.
The event was supported by Future Focus, a Telford & Wrekin initiative that works with students at New Road Academy three days a week. The programme provides tailored advice and guidance to students in Years 9 to 11 and also supports other secondary academies within the Learning Community Trust.
Student feedback highlighted the value of the event:
Mustafa, who plays for Lilleshall Cricket Team, said: “I’ve always loved cricket and want to train as a coach. Speaking to colleges and Crossbar Education helped me think about how I can do that after school.”
Alicia Arnold, interested in animal care, shared: “It was really helpful speaking to people who work in the industry and learning about the different paths I could take. The careers fair made me even more excited about the future.”
Lee Turner, a Year 10 student, said: “I’m interested in construction and really enjoyed speaking with Paveaways. I’m now thinking seriously about doing an apprenticeship after my GCSEs.”
Parents were also invited to attend later in the day, encouraging conversations at home about post-16 options and helping families support students in making informed decisions
